He noted that the forthcoming world summit in Dakar comes at a time of \u201cmajor advances\u201d in international ocean diplomacy, citing the adoption of the High Seas Treaty (HST) by the United Nations in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On 19 June 2023, the 193 Member States of the United Nations (UN) adopted the Agreement on the International Treaty for the Protection of the High Seas. This text, ratified by more than 60 countries, is due to come into force on 17 January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis treaty, which Senegal signed in Nice, France, in 2025, marks a decisive step for our country in the protection of biodiversity on the high seas\u201d, emphasised the Director of the Office of the Minister for the Environment and Ecological Transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, \u201cthe challenge for Senegal now is to ratify it so that our country is part of the global dynamic of ocean governance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ababacar Gu\u00e8ye took the opportunity to recall Senegal's \u201cpioneering role\u201d in the community management of marine protected areas (MPAs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur country stands out for the participatory governance of its fifteen marine protected areas, five reserves under maritime influence and four marine national parks. With almost 6 % of its coastal zone protected, Senegal is above the regional average and remains a key player in the preservation of the world's natural heritage\u201d, he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IMPAC 6 kick-off workshop focused on the missions, organisation and operation of the national organising committee for the summit, with a view to mobilising partners. The meeting ends this Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
